Fitbit’s Next Generation Takes Shape

The Google Fitbit Edge represents a major redesign of Fitbit’s premium fitness tracker, succeeding the Charge 6 with a more contemporary appearance and expanded capabilities. Announced on October 12, 2026, and released on October 27, the $179.99 device occupies the space between Google’s screenless Fitbit Air and its more advanced Pixel Watch lineup.

The curved recycled-aluminum case houses a 1.34-inch (34 mm) OLED display, the largest and brightest yet on a Fitbit tracker. A physical side button, customizable watch faces, and interchangeable bands add everyday practicality.

More Health Data, More Personal Insights

The Fitbit Edge monitors heart rate, blood oxygen trends, skin temperature, and heart-rate variability, with ECG functionality for assessing heart rhythm and potential atrial fibrillation. Sleep tracking provides nightly information about sleep stages, duration, and recovery, helping users recognize patterns in their rest and overall wellness.

Google’s expanded health-monitoring platform also introduces longer-term insights into indicators such as blood pressure and insulin resistance. These features focus on identifying trends over time and are subject to availability and subscription requirements.

Fitness Tracking and Google Health Coach

The Fitbit Edge supports more than 50 exercise types, with integrated GPS for recording outdoor activities and an altimeter for monitoring elevation changes. Automatic activity recognition uses Google’s AI-powered contextual analysis to identify exercise patterns, with expanded recognition across more than 100 activities. Real-time workout metrics and heart-rate broadcasting provide additional support during training.

Google Health Coach is one of the device’s most significant additions. Powered by Gemini, the personalized coaching system interprets activity, sleep, and recovery data to provide guidance tailored to individual routines and goals. Users can receive fitness recommendations, discuss their progress, and adjust their plans through the Google Health app. Full coaching functionality requires Google Health Premium.

Less Charging, More Tracking

The Fitbit Edge provides up to seven days of battery life under Google’s stated testing conditions, with fast charging capable of supplying approximately one day of use in five minutes. Its 5 ATM and IP68 ratings provide protection against water exposure and dust, supporting daily exercise and use in wet conditions.

Bluetooth connectivity enables smartphone notifications, music controls, and Google Maps navigation through compatible Android and iOS devices. Users can customize watch faces and organize information tiles through the Google Health app.

One notable omission is NFC payment support, meaning the Edge cannot make contactless payments through Google Wallet, despite that feature being available on the older Fitbit Charge 6.
