A New Flagship Joins the Surface Family

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra is a premium 15-inch Windows laptop developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, targeting creative professionals, developers, engineers and users working with advanced AI applications.

Ultra introduces an entirely new hardware architecture developed around NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform. Its arrival also marks a more ambitious effort by Microsoft to compete in the professional laptop market, where Apple’s MacBook Pro has established a particularly strong following among creators.

Microsoft has given the Ultra a new aluminum chassis available in Platinum and Nightfall, retaining the understated styling associated with Surface products. It remains relatively portable for a laptop intended to handle demanding technical and creative workloads.

NVIDIA RTX Spark Powers a New Kind of Laptop

The defining technology of the Surface Laptop Ultra is NVIDIA’s RTX Spark Superchip, an ARM-based processor that combines an NVIDIA Grace CPU with Blackwell-generation RTX graphics. Depending on the configuration, the platform offers up to 20 CPU cores and 6,144 GPU cores, bringing NVIDIA’s graphics and AI technologies into a tightly integrated laptop architecture.

One of its most significant capabilities is support for up to 128GB of unified memory, shared between the CPU and GPU. This allows exceptionally large AI models and datasets to remain in system memory, addressing a major limitation of conventional laptops equipped with dedicated graphics cards. Microsoft claims the highest configurations can run AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally, with theoretical AI performance reaching one petaflop.

The Blackwell GPU also supports ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS and Reflex technologies, extending the laptop’s capabilities into gaming and other graphics-intensive applications. As an ARM-based Windows device, however, software compatibility remains an important consideration. Some applications and games still depend on emulation, and performance can vary considerably depending on how well individual programs support the architecture.

Premium Features Throughout

Beyond its NVIDIA processor, the Surface Laptop Ultra introduces several notable hardware improvements, including Microsoft’s most advanced laptop display, an expanded cooling system and new connectivity features.

Advanced Thermal Management
Microsoft’s largest laptop cooling system delivers up to 2.5 times the thermal capacity of its Surface Laptop 15-inch (8th Edition). Larger fans operate at lower speeds to help maintain performance during demanding workloads while reducing noise.

Magnetic Connect Charging
The new Magnetic Connect system introduces a magnetically attaching USB-C charging cable that disconnects when pulled. The port also functions as a conventional USB-C connection, supporting data transfer, displays and other accessories.

Precision Haptic Touchpad
The Surface Laptop Ultra features Microsoft’s largest precision haptic touchpad, approximately 30% larger than the one on the Surface Laptop (8th Edition). It provides tactile feedback and expanded space for gestures, navigation and detailed editing.

NVIDIA RTX Gaming
Blackwell graphics bring hardware-accelerated ray tracing, DLSS upscaling and NVIDIA Reflex to supported games. The 120Hz display complements these technologies, although performance and compatibility depend on the individual title.

Powerful Laptop With a Specific Audience

With configurations reaching $5,899 USD, the Surface Laptop Ultra occupies a specialized corner of the premium laptop market. Its combination of substantial unified memory, CUDA acceleration and sophisticated hardware makes it an interesting proposition for developers and technical creators whose workflows can take advantage of these capabilities.

For buyers focused primarily on everyday productivity, its considerable price and specialized architecture deserve careful consideration.
