Apple Watch Series 12 Takes Health Tracking Further

The Apple Watch Series 12, released September 18, 2026, introduces significant improvements to health monitoring, fitness tracking, and everyday functionality. Powered by Apple’s new S11 chip and watchOS 27, the smartwatch places greater emphasis on understanding the body’s condition throughout the day. It starts at $399 USD and is available in two sizes with several material and color options.

The biggest advancement is Apple’s new Health Sensing System, which enables more frequent heart rate measurements and introduces a daily Readiness Score. The Series 12 also brings improved step tracking, faster charging, and more capable Siri assistance, continuing Apple’s efforts to make the smartwatch a useful companion for health and daily activities.

Familiar Design With New Finishes

The Apple Watch Series 12 retains Apple’s familiar rounded rectangular design, with 42 mm and 46 mm cases and an Always-On Retina OLED display. Aluminum models are available in dark bronze, black, light gold, and space gray, while titanium versions come in natural and radiant gold. Apple has also introduced ceramic models in pearl white and night blue, expanding the range of premium finishes.

Aluminum models now feature Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims is 60% tougher than the previous Ion-X glass. The watch maintains its thin, lightweight profile, with a touchscreen, Digital Crown, and side button providing familiar controls. Its extensive collection of compatible bands allows for further personalization.

Heart Rate Monitoring Takes a Major Step Forward

The Series 12 introduces a redesigned Health Sensing System with new optical and electrical heart sensors. Heart rate measurements now occur every five seconds throughout the day, while heart rate variability (HRV) readings are collected up to 24 times more frequently. These measurements provide additional information about cardiovascular health, stress, and recovery, alongside existing features such as ECG, sleep tracking, and sleep apnea notifications.

A new Readiness Score evaluates factors including sleep, activity, and physiological measurements to help users understand their capacity for daily exertion. The watch also introduces daytime vitals monitoring, allowing users to observe changes in their personal health patterns beyond overnight measurements. These developments make health monitoring the defining focus of this generation.

A Welcome Boost to Battery Performance

Apple has redesigned the Series 12’s step-counting system with new machine learning algorithms intended to improve accuracy throughout the day. Indoor walking and running workouts also benefit from more precise distance measurements, while familiar features such as Activity Rings, training load, and Workout Buddy continue to support a wide range of exercise routines.

Battery life remains rated at up to 24 hours for everyday use, with outdoor workout tracking extended to 10 hours, a 25% improvement over Series 11. Charging is also faster, with 15 minutes providing up to 12 hours of battery life under Apple’s testing conditions. These changes are especially useful for people who track both daytime activity and overnight sleep.

watchOS 27 Brings New Intelligence Features

With watchOS 27, the Apple Watch Series 12 gains Siri AI, offering more conversational assistance, broader knowledge, and the ability to respond using relevant personal context. The updated interface also includes a dynamic app grid with suggested applications, improved Smart Stack recommendations, and expanded one-handed gesture controls. Some intelligence features require a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.

Apple has also announced Audio Intelligence features scheduled for later in 2026, including Siri Recap and Live Rewind. These capabilities are intended to help users recall important details from conversations and recognize relevant sounds. Their arrival will further expand the watch’s role as a personal assistant, with privacy and on-device processing central to Apple’s approach.
