“The Last Great Hamburger Stand”

Founded in Los Angeles in 1947 by entrepreneur Lovie Yancey, Fatburger began as a small hamburger stand called Mr. Fatburger before adopting its current name in 1952. Yancey established a reputation for generously sized, freshly prepared burgers that attracted a loyal following, including Hollywood celebrities and musicians.

The brand’s slogan, The Last Great Hamburger Stand, reflects its longstanding commitment to traditional American hamburgers.

Fatburger expanded beyond Southern California through franchising, eventually becoming an international restaurant chain. Its history includes several ownership changes, celebrity investors and a growing presence in markets outside the United States.

Bigger Burgers, Made to Order

The Original Fatburger remains the centerpiece of the menu, featuring a freshly prepared beef patty served on a toasted sponge-dough bun with traditional toppings. Customers can customize their burgers with cheese, bacon, eggs and other additions, while several patty sizes accommodate different appetites.

Fatburger’s larger burgers are particularly associated with the brand, including substantial double- and triple-patty creations. The chain emphasizes cooking burgers to order, allowing customers to choose their preferred toppings and create combinations that extend beyond a standard fast-food hamburger.

A Menu of American Comfort Food

Fatburger’s menu includes several traditional American diner favorites, beginning with its Skinny Fries, thicker Fat Fries and sweet potato fries. Onion rings provide another popular side, while hand-scooped milkshakes feature flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and Oreo cookies and cream.

Chicken sandwiches are available in grilled, crispy and spicy preparations, and participating restaurants offer Buffalo’s Express chicken wings with a selection of sauces. These additions give Fatburger a broader menu centered on burgers, chicken, sides and desserts.

California Classic

Fatburger’s connection to Los Angeles entertainment culture helped establish its reputation, with early customers including Redd Foxx and Ray Charles. Celebrity investors such as Magic Johnson, Cher and Janet Jackson subsequently contributed to the chain’s visibility, strengthening its association with Hollywood and popular culture.

International franchising brought Fatburger to Canada in 2005, beginning in Vancouver, followed by expansion into additional markets across Asia, the Middle East and other regions. Its worldwide restaurants maintain the familiar burger-focused concept, with menu variations and operating formats adapted to local markets.
