The Evolution of American Express Airport Lounges

The American Express Global Lounge Collection is a worldwide airport lounge access program available to eligible premium American Express cardholders. It combines the company’s own branded lounges with an extensive network of participating airline and independent lounges, offering travelers comfortable places to relax, dine and work before their flights.

American Express introduced its flagship Centurion Lounge concept in 2013, opening its first location at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. The network subsequently expanded into major international airports, establishing a recognizable hospitality brand within the premium travel market. Today, the broader Global Lounge Collection provides access to more than 1,550 participating lounges across over 140 countries.

The Centurion Lounge represents American Express’s flagship airport hospitality experience, with upscale interiors, comfortable seating and complimentary food and beverages. Many locations feature menus developed in collaboration with acclaimed chefs, regionally inspired dishes and cocktail programs emphasizing premium spirits and original creations.

Amenities vary by airport, with select locations offering shower suites, private workspaces, family rooms and outdoor terraces. The Atlanta lounge, for example, features a dedicated whiskey bar and outdoor seating, while other locations incorporate local artwork and design elements reflecting their destinations. Centurion Lounges have become a prominent part of American Express’s premium travel identity, particularly among frequent flyers seeking a comfortable airport experience.

A Worldwide Network of Lounge Partners

The Global Lounge Collection extends American Express airport lounge access beyond its own Centurion locations through partnerships with established lounge operators. Participating networks include Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, Escape Lounges and Delta Sky Club, alongside selected regional and independent operators. These arrangements provide eligible cardholders with lounge options at hundreds of airports worldwide.

The experience varies considerably between partners. Delta Sky Clubs offer airline-operated hospitality facilities, while Priority Pass provides access to a diverse collection of independently managed lounges. Plaza Premium operates its own international network, and Escape Lounges participate through the Centurion Studio Partner program. Individual locations establish their own services, facilities and admission conditions, giving the Global Lounge Collection a broad range of experiences.
