A Warning About American Democracy

Jennifer Welch approaches American politics through the experiences and beliefs that shaped her upbringing in Oklahoma’s Bible Belt. In Not Today, Fascists, she argues that the growing influence of religious conservatism, corporate interests and authoritarian political movements has weakened democratic institutions and divided Americans along cultural and economic lines.

Welch challenges the assumption that political divisions are inevitable, questioning how misinformation, religious messaging and entrenched power structures influence public opinion. Her central argument calls for greater political awareness, stronger institutional accountability and renewed attention to the economic concerns shared by ordinary Americans.

Religion, Christian Nationalism and Political Power

Welch examines the political influence of evangelical Christianity, particularly movements seeking to bring government institutions and public policy into closer alignment with conservative religious beliefs. Drawing on her experiences in Oklahoma, she questions the role of prosperity theology, religious leadership and church networks in shaping political attitudes.

The book distinguishes personal religious belief from organized political efforts to expand religious authority. Welch argues that Christian nationalism threatens the separation of church and state, using contemporary political developments and historical examples to support her concerns about democratic governance and individual freedoms.

Economic Inequality and the American Political System

Economic inequality is another major concern in Not Today, Fascists. Welch argues that religious messaging, particularly the prosperity gospel, has helped normalize wealth disparities and protect powerful economic interests. She questions the influence of corporations, wealthy donors and religious organizations on government policy, connecting these relationships to the financial pressures experienced by working Americans.

Her criticism also extends to the Democratic Party, which she believes has struggled to communicate an effective economic alternative. Welch advocates a more populist approach emphasizing structural equality, public accountability and policies that respond directly to ordinary voters’ material concerns.

The Influence of I’ve Had It

Welch brings the outspoken personality and irreverent humor of her I’ve Had It podcast to the page. Her writing uses satire, blunt observations and personal experiences to discuss complicated political subjects in conversational language. The familiarity of her voice gives the book the character of an extended political commentary rather than a conventional academic examination.

Her partnership with Angie Sullivan on I’ve Had It helped establish an audience accustomed to direct criticism of public figures, institutions and cultural trends.
