Welcome to the ZIRP! Economy

ZIRP! takes DIIV’s atmospheric guitar sound into more melodic and experimental territory, reflecting the Brooklyn band’s interest in changing its creative approach. Following Frog in Boiling Water, the group began working with producer A. G. Cook, whose background in experimental pop introduced new possibilities for arrangement and songwriting.

The album’s promotional campaign reflected its unconventional character, with mysterious business cards and a telephone hotline inviting listeners into its fictional corporate world.

Unexpected Creative Partnership: A. G. Cook

The collaboration with A. G. Cook brought surprise perspective to DIIV’s guitar-driven music. Known for his experimental pop productions, Cook encouraged the band to develop songs through live performances and instrumental experimentation, recording drums and exploring guitar arrangements before settling on final song structures.

From Dream-Pop to Experimental Rock

The album’s title references Zero Interest Rate Policy, an economic approach associated with cheap borrowing and speculative investment. DIIV uses this concept to address consumerism, corporate influence, technological power and the uncertainties of modern American life.

Trillions examines the emptiness of excessive wealth, while Evangelizer introduces unsettling images of corporate control and commercialized medicine.
