A Terrifying Mystery at Sea

Set in the fictional Newfoundland fishing community of Snooks Arm, Below centers on Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett), a struggling fisherman and father still haunted by his own father’s mysterious death.

When a dangerous creature begins attacking residents, Calvin joins marine biologist Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) to investigate. The six-part Netflix thriller weaves the growing threat into a story of family tensions and a community fighting for survival.

Newfoundland, Folklore, and a Community in Decline

Newfoundland’s rugged coastline and isolated fishing communities provide an atmospheric setting for Below. The fictional town of Snooks Arm reflects the economic challenges facing communities dependent on traditional fishing industries, where declining opportunities have driven younger generations away.

Local traditions, maritime folklore, and the unforgiving Atlantic landscape add authenticity to the mystery, with filming locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

A Strong Ensemble Anchors the Mystery

Josh Hartnett leads the series as Calvin Penney, a protective father whose troubled past complicates his efforts to save his community. Mackenzie Davis plays marine biologist Fonda Howander, whose scientific knowledge proves essential to investigating the creature.

Charlie Heaton and Rohan Campbell portray Calvin’s sons Wade and Jay, whose complicated relationships with their father add personal drama to the unfolding crisis.

A Monster in the Atlantic

Below draws on classic creature-horror traditions, using underwater encounters, mysterious disappearances, and the vast Atlantic Ocean to create suspense.

The creature’s presence gradually becomes more threatening as Calvin and Fonda investigate its origins. Atmospheric coastal photography, underwater sequences, and visual effects support the supernatural mystery, while the limited six-episode format keeps the danger closely connected to the characters and their community.
