Aaron Sorkin Returns to Facebook

The Social Reckoning is a 2026 biographical drama written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, serving as a companion film to 2010’s The Social Network. Released theatrically on October 9, 2026, the film stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong, and revisits Facebook during one of the most controversial periods in its history.

The story follows Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a Facebook engineer who becomes increasingly troubled by the company’s internal research and business practices. She joins forces with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to expose confidential information about the platform’s influence on its users and society. Their investigation places them in conflict with one of the world’s most powerful technology companies, led by Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong).

The events depicted in The Social Reckoning are inspired by the Facebook Files, a series of investigative reports published by The Wall Street Journal in September 2021. The investigation drew on thousands of internal documents provided by former Facebook employee Frances Haugen, revealing what the company knew about the effects of its products on users and public discourse.

Among the revelations were internal findings concerning Instagram’s impact on teenage girls, the spread of misinformation, political polarization and the role of Facebook’s algorithms in amplifying harmful content. The documents raised questions about how the company balanced user safety with engagement and advertising revenue.

Haugen subsequently revealed her identity publicly and testified before the US Senate in October 2021, calling for greater transparency and oversight of social media companies. Her disclosures intensified international scrutiny of Facebook and helped bring questions about platform accountability into mainstream political debate.

Sixteen Years After The Social Network

Aaron Sorkin returns to the subject that earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay with David Fincher’s The Social Network in 2010. This time, Sorkin takes the director’s chair himself, bringing his characteristic rapid-fire dialogue and politically charged storytelling to a later chapter in Facebook’s history.

The two films examine different stages of the company’s evolution. The Social Network explored Facebook’s origins, the relationships between its founders and the disputes surrounding its early success. The Social Reckoning takes place after Facebook has become a global institution, focusing on the consequences of its influence and the individuals seeking to hold it accountable.

The film has received a mixed critical response, with praise for its central performances and the relevance of its subject matter. Some critics have questioned its dramatic impact and direction, particularly when measured against Fincher’s acclaimed original. Its opening weekend brought in approximately $5.5 million domestically, a modest debut for a film carrying the legacy of one of the most celebrated technology dramas of the 21st century.
