Another Dangerous Assignment for the Slow Horses

London Rules is the fifth novel in Mick Herron’s Slough House espionage series, published in 2018. The story follows a dysfunctional team of disgraced British intelligence agents led by Jackson Lamb, a brilliant but abrasive veteran of MI5. Their latest troubles unfold against a backdrop of political instability, terrorist threats, and institutional incompetence.

As a series of apparently unconnected attacks shakes Britain, the agents at Slough House are dealing with problems of their own, including a mysterious attempt on the life of computer specialist Roddy Ho. The resulting investigation draws together national security, personal rivalries, and the unpredictable behavior of Herron’s misfit spies.

Political Chaos at the Heart of MI5

At MI5 headquarters in Regent’s Park, First Desk Claude Whelan faces mounting pressure as Britain experiences a series of terrorist attacks. His responsibilities include protecting an increasingly vulnerable prime minister while navigating political ambitions, hostile media coverage, and the maneuvering of his deputy, Diana Taverner, who is ready to exploit his mistakes.

Herron draws on the political atmosphere surrounding Brexit, portraying a government consumed by rivalries and personal ambition. The security crisis exposes competing interests within Britain’s intelligence establishment, where reputations and careers can become as important as the threats facing the country.

London Rules: Hit Apple TV Adaptation

_{Season 5 Panellog Review: https://panellog.com/culture-reviews/7834}

London Rules was adapted into the fifth season of Slow Horses, which premiered on Apple TV on September 24, 2025. The six-episode season stars Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, alongside Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, Kristin Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner, and Christopher Chung as Roddy Ho.

The adaptation retains the novel’s central espionage storyline, with Roddy’s suspicious new girlfriend and a series of unusual incidents across London drawing the Slough House team into another dangerous investigation. Adapted for television by Will Smith, the series has brought Herron’s characters and distinctive blend of suspense and dark comedy to an international audience.

Espionage With a Dark Sense of Humor

The novel takes its title from the London Rules, an unofficial philosophy of intelligence work centered on protecting yourself and ensuring someone else takes the blame. Herron uses this attitude to satirize the bureaucratic culture of British intelligence, where political maneuvering, professional jealousy, and questionable decisions frequently complicate matters.

Much of the humor comes from Jackson Lamb, whose crude remarks, ruthless observations, and complete disregard for professional etiquette make him one of contemporary spy fiction’s most entertaining characters. Herron’s sharp dialogue and cynical perspective give the novel a distinctly British sense of humor, with absurd situations and genuine danger occupying the same story.
